Mouryou Senki MADARA

Mouryou Senki Madara, released as an original video animation in 1991 by Bandai Visual, serves as an adaptation of the popular manga series created by Eiji Otsuka and illustrated by Sho-u Tajima. The source material, which debuted in 1987, was part of a multimedia project that famously spanned manga, video games, and animation, reflecting the era's burgeoning interest in complex, dark fantasy narratives that blended traditional Japanese folklore with science fiction aesthetics.

The animation design sought to translate Tajima’s distinctively sharp, gritty, and detailed linework into a moving medium, a task that presented significant challenges for the production team at the time. While the OVA format allowed for higher production values than standard television series, the project is often discussed by enthusiasts for how it distilled the dense, multi-layered plot of the original manga into a condensed visual experience that captured the atmosphere of the series' apocalyptic world.
