Mr. Black: Green Star

Mr. Black: Green Star is a 2010 animated feature film produced by the Shanghai Animation Film Studio, serving as a continuation of the beloved Black Cat Detective (Heimao Jingzhang) franchise. The original series, which debuted in the 1980s, became a cornerstone of Chinese children's television by blending police procedural elements with stylized action. This film was produced to revitalize the intellectual property for a new generation, updating the visual aesthetic while maintaining the core premise of a brave detective protecting the forest animals from criminal threats.

The film was directed by Dai Tiejia and others at the studio, who sought to bridge the gap between traditional cel-animation nostalgia and contemporary digital techniques. The design retains the iconic visual identity of the lead character—a detective cat wearing a distinct uniform—while incorporating more fluid, modern animation sequences. Upon its release, the film was received as a cultural touchstone for adults who grew up with the original series, while functioning as a standard animated adventure for the domestic youth market.
