Where it came from
My Father’s Room is a poignant animated short film directed by Nari Jang, produced as her graduation project at the Korea National University of Arts in 2009. The film was created to process and convey the complex, traumatic childhood experiences Jang faced due to her father's alcoholism. By utilizing a distinct visual language that blends surreal, stop-motion-inspired aesthetics with personal narrative, the work serves as an intimate exploration of domestic instability and the lasting psychological echoes of growing up in a fractured household.
Upon its release, the film was widely praised by critics and festival curators for its raw honesty and evocative art style. It secured significant recognition on the international stage, winning the Grand Prix at the Hiroshima International Animation Festival in 2010. This acclaim helped establish Jang as a notable voice in independent animation, highlighting how the medium could be effectively leveraged to document deeply personal histories and facilitate a difficult dialogue between a creator and their past.
