Where it came from
Nagasaki 1945: Angelus no Kane was produced by Mushi Production in 2005 to mark the 60th anniversary of the atomic bombing of Nagasaki. The film was commissioned as an educational piece to preserve the memories of survivors, known as hibakusha, specifically focusing on the story of Dr. Takashi Nagai, a radiologist who authored the book of the same name. The project served as a somber reflection on the tragedy and aimed to pass the historical narrative to a younger generation through the medium of animation.
The film was directed by Seiji Arihara, a veteran animator who worked to maintain a respectful and grounded aesthetic that avoided gratuitous violence while capturing the emotional weight of the disaster. By adapting Dr. Nagai's account, the production designers focused on the human element of the post-bombing landscape, emphasizing themes of peace and resilience. Upon its release, it was primarily utilized in academic and commemorative settings across Japan as a tool for peace education, gaining recognition for its earnest approach to historical documentation.
