Where it came from
Nanashi Kaidan 2nd Season was released in 2023 as part of an original net animation series produced by Shogakukan-Shueisha Productions. The series was designed to breathe new life into the traditional Japanese urban legend and ghost story format, catering to a modern audience by utilizing a distinct, stylized animation aesthetic that emphasizes eerie atmosphere over graphic horror.
The creative direction for this series focused on accessibility and suspense, drawing on classic folklore motifs to create short, self-contained narratives. As an ONA, the project benefited from a digital-first distribution model, allowing the studio to experiment with unconventional visual storytelling techniques that were generally well-received by fans of contemporary supernatural anthology works.
