Nemuri no Mori

Nemuri no Mori, or Sleeping Forest, is the second installment in the Kaga series by celebrated Japanese mystery author Keigo Higashino. First published in 1989, the novel centers on Detective Kyoichiro Kaga as he navigates the high-stakes, insular world of professional ballet. Following the introduction of Kaga in Sotsugyo, this work solidifies his character as an observant and cerebral investigator, distinguishing itself through its atmospheric portrayal of the rigorous and often competitive environment of a prestigious dance company.

The narrative design reflects Higashino’s hallmark blend of intricate procedural plotting and deep psychological exploration. By setting the mystery within a ballet troupe, Higashino utilizes the elegance and tension of the art form to mirror the hidden motives of his characters. Upon its release, the novel was well-received for its departure from traditional 'whodunnit' tropes, marking an early milestone in the career of an author who would go on to become one of the most widely read and adapted writers in modern Japanese literature.
