Neputa no Mondoriko

Neputa no Mondoriko is a Japanese children's picture book that draws deeply from the cultural heritage of the Aomori Prefecture, specifically the renowned Aomori Nebuta Matsuri. It was created to celebrate the vibrant visual language and folkloric tradition of the massive paper-mache floats that define this festival, distilling the kinetic energy of the summer drums and flute music into a narrative format accessible to young readers.

The illustrations for this work lean into the bold, graphic sensibilities of traditional ukiyo-e and the distinct, high-contrast aesthetic of the festival lanterns. By focusing on the mythic figures and local legends associated with the Nebuta tradition, the book serves as both a piece of regional storytelling and an artistic preservation of the festival's iconography. It has been well-regarded by collectors of Japanese children's literature as a thoughtful bridge between historical craft and contemporary media.
