Nerenai!!!

Nerenai!!! is a surreal and avant-garde manga series created by the Japanese artist Daisuke Ichiba. First appearing in the late 1990s within the pages of the legendary alternative manga anthology Garo, the work is characteristic of Ichiba’s distinctive style, which favors grotesque, fever-dream imagery and non-linear narrative structures. It emerged from the underground Gekiga movement, a genre dedicated to serious, often dark and disturbing storytelling that pushed the boundaries of traditional Japanese comics.

The visual language of the piece is defined by dense, scratchy ink work that evokes a sense of unsettling isolation and psychological fragmentation. Ichiba’s design philosophy focuses on the subconscious, intentionally stripping away conventional character development in favor of atmospheric dread. While the work remains a niche cult interest, it is frequently cited by connoisseurs of Japanese counterculture for its uncompromising artistic vision and its contribution to the darker, more abstract fringes of the medium.
