Nian Fanchen

Nian Fanchen, also known as Year of the Rabbit, is an ONA series produced by Tencent Animation & Comics. The series was developed as part of the studio's broader initiative to produce high-quality, culturally resonant animated shorts that highlight Chinese folklore and modern aesthetic sensibilities. By leveraging advanced 3D character modeling and fluid animation techniques, the studio aimed to bridge the gap between traditional storytelling and contemporary digital art styles, garnering attention for its polished visual presentation.

The creative direction for the series focuses on a blend of whimsical character design and atmospheric world-building. Art directors at Tencent sought to create a distinct visual identity that would appeal to younger audiences while maintaining a sense of cultural heritage. Upon release, the series was well-received by the domestic audience for its technical execution and ability to capture the specific tone of the Lunar New Year celebrations, solidifying its place as a representative work of Tencent’s current animation portfolio.
