NG Knight Lamune & 40 EX

NG Knight Lamune & 40 EX, released in 1991, serves as the three-part original video animation sequel to the original television series that concluded earlier that year. The production was spearheaded by Ashi Productions, maintaining the lighthearted, fantasy-adventure tone established by the original series. By shifting the format from television to OVA, the creators were able to refine the visual quality of the mecha battles while continuing the narrative of the protagonist, Lamune, as he is summoned once again to the world of Hara-Hara World to confront a new threat.

The character and mecha designs remained consistent with the vibrant, 90s anime aesthetic that drew heavily from the era's popularity of role-playing game tropes and heroic adventure themes. The series was designed to appeal to younger audiences while utilizing the meta-humor and references to video game culture that were central to the franchise's identity. Upon its release, it was well-received by the established fanbase, providing a polished conclusion to the storyline while cementing the legacy of the Lamune series as a nostalgic staple of early 1990s mecha-fantasy.
