Nightwalker: The Midnight Detective

Nightwalker: The Midnight Detective was produced by AIC and distributed by Bandai Visual, emerging during the late 1990s anime boom when supernatural noir and gothic aesthetics were gaining significant traction in the television market. The series follows Shido Tatsuhiko, a vampire detective operating in the underworld of Tokyo, a premise designed to blend hardboiled investigative tropes with traditional Japanese horror elements.

The character designs and visual direction were crafted to emphasize a moody, atmospheric tone, drawing heavily on cinematic lighting and a subdued color palette to differentiate it from the more vibrant action-oriented series of the era. While it garnered a dedicated cult following for its distinct visual style and mature themes, it was met with mixed critical reception at the time, often compared to other urban fantasy titles of the late nineties that competed for the same niche demographic.
