NINA

Nina is a seminal work within the broader legacy of the Studio Ghibli art book and character design collections, specifically emerging from the conceptual development phases of Hayao Miyazaki’s projects. These documents were created to provide animators with a definitive visual reference for character movement, expression, and costume, serving as the essential bridge between initial sketches and final cel animation. They reflect the studio’s commitment to hand-drawn artistry and are valued for their candid look into the meticulous planning required to bring complex, spirited protagonists to life on screen.

The design philosophy behind such character studies centers on the Japanese concept of 'ma' or negative space, ensuring the character’s design is distinct yet flexible enough for fluidity in motion. These documents were often curated for internal studio use, emphasizing Miyazaki’s signature approach to character silhouette and personality-driven aesthetics. Their transition from utilitarian production tools to sought-after collectibles stems from a global appreciation for the studio's craftsmanship, with art enthusiasts and animation historians praising these pieces for preserving the intimate, raw creative process of master illustrators.
