Nine: Original-ban

Released in 1983, Nine: Original-ban was produced by Group TAC under the direction of Gisaburo Sugii. The project emerged from a unique collaborative effort among Japanese manga artists and animators who sought to explore more experimental and avant-garde storytelling techniques in feature-length animation. The film was based on the popular manga series by Mitsuru Adachi, which revolves around the lives and sports-related struggles of high school students, blending romance with the competitive spirit of baseball.

The animation style is characteristic of the early 1980s, emphasizing fluid character expressions and a distinct shift in color palettes to denote emotional beats, a trademark of Sugii's work at the time. The film was well-received for its faithfulness to the source material's charm and its ability to condense the serialized manga narrative into a cohesive cinematic experience. It solidified the transition of Adachi's work into the broader animation landscape, paving the way for numerous subsequent adaptations of his sports dramas.
