After a botched robbery attempt leads to their banishment, a clumsy pig demon and his toad companion hatch an ambitious scheme: impersonate the legendary monk Tang San Zang and his disciples to claim the glory of the sacred scrolls. Recruiting a chatterbox weasel and a cowardly gorilla to complete their ragtag troupe, the quartet embarks on a chaotic journey across a world filled with dangerous rivals and mistaken identities. Their charade takes a perilous turn when they stumble into the path of a sinister adversary plotting to consume the monk for immortality. Forced to confront their own limitations, the group must decide if they are content playing pretend or if they possess the true mettle of heroes.

Where it came from
Nobody is a short film produced by the Shanghai Animation Film Studio, a powerhouse of Chinese animation known for its pioneering work throughout the 20th century. Released during a period when the studio was experimenting with various artistic styles, the film serves as a representative piece of the studio’s commitment to nuanced, expressive visual storytelling that often balanced traditional Chinese artistic sensibilities with modern narrative techniques.
The production reflects the studio’s collaborative approach to animation, where artistic directors and illustrators sought to convey existential or social themes through minimalist visual palettes. Upon its release, the film was noted by critics and festival audiences for its understated aesthetic and its ability to evoke complex emotions without extensive dialogue, securing its place within the studio’s extensive archive of experimental shorts.
