Where it came from
Nulu-chan and me was produced in 2012 by the independent animation studio Space Neko Company as an original net animation, or ONA. It emerged during a period when small-scale, digital-first projects were gaining traction in Japan, allowing niche studios to experiment with shorter, more idiosyncratic narrative formats that prioritized stylistic expression over traditional television constraints.
The animation reflects the experimental aesthetic common to Space Neko Company’s output, which often utilizes stylized, lo-fi digital art to create an intimate atmosphere. Designed to explore the rapport between its central character and Nulu-chan, the work was received as a quiet addition to the ONA landscape, appreciated primarily by collectors of independent digital animation for its deliberate pacing and distinct visual identity.
