The "Nyanbo" are creatures with square bodies with ears and tails that came to Earth from outer space. There's Tora, who dreams of repairing their broken UFO and returning to space, as well as his sister Kotora, the precocious Shiro, the mischievous Mike, the mysterious Kuro, and many more. All of these Nyanbos are now happily living much like cats, free-spirited and sometimes getting into trouble, in places that humans don't know about.

Where it came from
Nyanbo! emerged in 2016 as a spin-off of the popular Danbo character, who originally appeared in Kiyohiko Azuma's manga series Yotsuba&!. The series was produced by the animation studio Shirogumi, which sought to bring the inanimate cardboard robot concept into a new, cat-themed iteration. Directed by Akira Iwase, the show features small, cat-eared cardboard characters who embark on miniature adventures, retaining the whimsical and gentle tone of its predecessor.
The aesthetic design of the Nyanbo! figures and animation emphasizes a clean, minimalist style that mirrors the tactile nature of the original Danbo cardboard box construction. By integrating these characters into a short-form television format, Shirogumi aimed to appeal to both existing fans of Yotsuba&! and a younger demographic. The series was generally well-received for its charming visual presentation and its ability to expand the franchise's universe through simple, emotive storytelling.
