Obake no Q-tarou

Obake no Q-tarou originated as a collaborative manga series created by the duo Fujiko Fujio, published starting in 1964. The story follows a friendly, mischievous ghost who moves in with a human family, blending slapstick comedy with the mundane challenges of domestic life. The series became a cultural phenomenon in Japan, defined by its gentle humor and the distinct, rounded character design of the lead ghost, which moved away from the frightening depictions of spirits common in folklore.

The 1965 television series was produced by Tokyo Movie Shinsha and animated by Shin-Ei Animation, marking one of the earliest successful adaptations of a manga into a long-running television anime. It was instrumental in establishing the template for the 'living together with a supernatural being' trope in Japanese media. The animation style was intentionally simplified to suit the medium of the time, emphasizing clear silhouettes and expressive, comedic character acting that resonated deeply with children and helped secure the characters' place in Japanese popular culture for decades.
