Where it came from
The Obake Zukan 2nd Season was produced by Studio Fanworks and premiered in 2022 as a continuation of the television series based on the popular children's book series written by Hiroshi Saito and illustrated by Etsuyoshi Miyamoto. The series occupies a unique space in Japanese children's media, blending educational elements with light horror to teach viewers about traditional Japanese monsters through a contemporary, accessible lens.
The series design maintains the aesthetic established in the first season, focusing on a minimalist and character-driven animation style that emphasizes the personalities of the various ghosts and monsters. It was received as a gentle introduction to folklore for younger audiences, praised for its rhythmic storytelling and its ability to adapt the whimsical, yet slightly eerie, tone of Miyamoto’s original illustrations into a televised format.
