Obake Zukan

Obake Zukan, or Ghost Encyclopedia, emerged in 2020 as a television adaptation of the popular children’s book series written by Hiroshi Saitō and illustrated by Etsuyoshi Miyamoto. Produced by Studio Fanworks and aired on TV Tokyo, the series was designed to translate the suspenseful, educational tone of the original books into a short-form animated format. It serves as a guide to various Japanese folklore spirits, balancing light horror with cautionary tales for a younger audience.

The animation style prioritizes a whimsical, slightly eerie aesthetic that mirrors Miyamoto’s distinct illustrations from the source material. By maintaining a modular structure where each episode introduces a specific ghost and the rules for surviving an encounter with it, the production successfully captured the curiosity-driven appeal of the original books. It was well-received as a staple of contemporary children’s horror television, praised for its ability to introduce cultural folklore through a gentle, interactive lens.
