OCTOPOLIS

Octopolis is a short film produced at Geidai Animation, the animation department of the Tokyo University of the Arts. It emerged from the university's rigorous graduate program, which is noted for fostering experimental storytelling and traditional craft among burgeoning filmmakers. The project serves as an example of the academic environment's focus on technical proficiency and personal artistic vision rather than purely commercial outputs.

The film is defined by its distinctive visual language, which leans into textured, handcrafted animation styles that distinguish Geidai productions from mainstream studio aesthetics. By focusing on the interplay of rhythm and motion, the creators aimed to evoke a sense of underwater wonder through a minimalist narrative structure. It has been recognized primarily within international film festival circuits for its unique directorial perspective and its role in highlighting the pedagogical strength of the Geidai department.
