Where it came from
The Oh! My Goddess original video animation series was produced by AIC and released by Bandai Visual starting in 1993, adapting the long-running manga series by Kosuke Fujishima. The production emerged during a period of high interest in romantic comedy and fantasy storytelling in Japanese animation, aiming to capture the gentle, supernatural charm of the source material. It served to translate Fujishima’s highly detailed character designs into a motion format, helping to establish the series as a staple of the 1990s anime landscape.
The design of the OVA leaned into the aesthetic sensibilities of early 1990s cel animation, characterized by soft color palettes and intricate attention to the mechanical and magical elements inherent in the story. Upon its release, the series was well-received by fans for its faithfulness to the manga’s tone, balancing lighthearted humor with a central romance that grounded the more fantastical aspects of the goddesses’ presence in the modern world.
