Oji-san Kaizou Kouza

Released in 1990, Oji-san Kaizou Kouza, or The Old Man Reformation Course, is a cult classic V-Cinema production directed by Takashi Miike. Emerging during the height of Japan's V-Cinema boom, the film was designed as a direct-to-video feature that capitalized on the era's appetite for transgressive, low-budget genre experimentation. The story follows a middle-aged protagonist navigating a bizarre and satirical existential crisis, serving as an early example of the dark, off-kilter humor that would later define Miike's prolific career.

The production was crafted with the aesthetic constraints and creative freedom typical of 1990s direct-to-video cinema. By eschewing theatrical release expectations, the film prioritized a surreal narrative approach that blended social commentary with grotesque imagery. While it remained a relatively obscure title outside of niche Japanese film enthusiast circles, it is retrospectively analyzed as a foundational project that illustrates the formative stylistic development of Miike as he transitioned into the auteur status he holds in contemporary global cinema.
