Ojii-san no Lamp

Ojii-san no Lamp, released in 2011, is an animated short film produced by Telecom Animation Film based on the 1977 children's book by Toshiyuki Niimi. The story follows a man living in a remote village during the transition from the Meiji to the Taisho era, focusing on his introduction of kerosene lamps to his community and the eventual arrival of electricity. It serves as a meditation on the rapid modernization of Japan and the personal obsolescence that often accompanies technological progress.

The film was directed by Masayuki Kojima, who sought to capture the poignant, bittersweet tone of the original literature through a restrained and atmospheric visual style. By focusing on the intimate relationship between the protagonist and his craft, the production highlights the human cost of industrialization. Upon its release, it was praised for its emotional depth and its ability to condense a complex historical narrative into a concise, evocative animated format.
