Where it came from
Ojii-chan te Ii na, which translates to It Is Nice to Have a Grandfather, is a beloved segment produced by NHK for the long-running musical program Minna no Uta. Introduced during a period when NHK sought to strengthen multi-generational bonds through heartfelt animation, the song serves as a tribute to the warmth and wisdom of grandfathers. It occupies a distinct space in Japanese television history, reflecting the network's commitment to creating poignant, family-oriented content that resonates across age groups.
The production features the signature aesthetic of NHK’s artistic collaborations, utilizing gentle, evocative visuals to match the sentimental tone of the composition. While specific individual designers for this segment are often credited within the collective archives of Minna no Uta, the piece is recognized for its minimalist, emotive illustration style that was intended to soothe viewers and evoke nostalgia. It remains a classic example of the aesthetic language used in 1980s and 90s public broadcasting to foster empathy and familial appreciation.
