Where it came from
Onee-chan emerged from the experimental animation landscape of NHK, Japan’s public broadcaster, as a short-form project reflecting the network's commitment to diverse artistic voices. Produced during a period when NHK sought to push the boundaries of digital and traditional aesthetics, the project focused on intimate, character-driven storytelling that prioritized atmosphere and subtle emotional resonance over high-octane commercial appeal.
The design philosophy behind Onee-chan was rooted in a minimalist aesthetic, utilizing simplified linework and a muted color palette to evoke a sense of quiet nostalgia. Created by animators working within the studio’s internal creative workshops, the piece was intended as an artistic exploration of sibling dynamics. It was received by critics as a poignant, if understated, contribution to the station's catalog of televised experimental shorts.
