Where it came from
Released in 2011, One Piece 3D: Mugiwara Chase marked the first time the long-running franchise utilized stereoscopic 3D animation. The film was produced by Toei Animation as part of a double feature alongside a Toriko movie, aiming to leverage the burgeoning trend of 3D cinema in Japan to offer fans a novel, immersive experience of the Straw Hat crew's world.
The film's visual approach was designed to highlight the spatial depth of the series' action sequences, with the plot centered on a concise, fast-paced quest involving Luffy's stolen straw hat. Directed by Hiroyuki Sato, the production prioritized experimentation with digital depth over complex narrative development, resulting in a short-form feature that serves primarily as a technical showcase for the series' transition into the third dimension.
