Where it came from
Defeat the Pirate Ganzack! was produced by Production I.G and released in 1998 as part of the Jump Super Anime Tour. It serves as the earliest animated adaptation of Eiichiro Oda's One Piece, premiering nearly a year before the Toei Animation television series began its long-running broadcast. Created as a promotional vehicle for the manga, the short allowed audiences to experience the world of the Grand Line in movement before the franchise solidified its iconic visual style.
The character designs for this production were helmed by Mitsuru Ishihara, who brought a distinct aesthetic that differs significantly from the later, more standardized Toei look. While the animation style was received as a unique stylistic snapshot of the series' early development, it remains a rare piece of memorabilia for collectors, marking the only instance of a major One Piece production handled by a studio other than Toei Animation.
