Where it came from
One Piece: Episode of East Blue was released in 2017 to commemorate the twentieth anniversary of Eiichiro Oda's long-running manga series. Produced by Toei Animation, the special was designed to condense and refresh the initial East Blue arc, serving as both a nostalgic retrospective for long-term fans and an accessible entry point for new viewers curious about the Straw Hat Pirates' origins.
The production team, led by director Takashi Otsuka, focused on re-animating key sequences with modern digital techniques while maintaining the emotional core of the original narrative. The special was received as a heartfelt tribute to the series' humble beginnings, emphasizing the early character development and the establishment of the central crew, which helped solidify the lasting legacy of the franchise in the global anime landscape.
