The story of the Hand Island no Bouken special is set a little before the events of One Piece Film Z and depicts a major "Hand Island" incident during the New World storyline. The story is set at "Cannon Town" where a parent and a child work as craftspeople. The incident revolves around them and a commodore of a marine base. The special will also have a flashback scene to the story in the first chapter of the manga, but with new animation.

Where it came from
Released in 2012 as a television special to celebrate the fifteenth anniversary of the One Piece manga, Episode of Luffy: Hand Island Adventure was produced by Toei Animation. The special serves as a reimagining of the early days of the Straw Hat Pirates' journey, specifically revisiting Luffy's origins and his recruitment of Coby. It was designed to bridge the gap between long-time fans and newcomers, offering a refreshed look at the series' emotional core through a high-production-value lens.
The animation direction for the special was handled by Toei's veteran team, who aimed to bring a more cinematic, fluid aesthetic to the episode compared to the weekly series. By focusing on the bond between Luffy and his crew members, the creative team sought to capture the adventurous spirit of Eiichiro Oda's original work while utilizing updated visual technology. The special was well-received by the fanbase for its nostalgic tone and its ability to condense the expansive lore of the Grand Line into a concise, self-contained narrative.
