Where it came from
Released in 2018 as the third installment in the 'Episode of' series of television specials, One Piece: Episode of Skypiea was produced by Toei Animation to provide a condensed, modernized retelling of the Skypiea arc. The special was designed to celebrate the long-running series' history while offering a fresh animation aesthetic for newer audiences who might find the pacing of the original long-form anime arc challenging.
The production sought to consolidate the expansive adventure on the Sky Island into a feature-length format, focusing on the core narrative beats of Luffy's confrontation with the self-proclaimed god, Enel. While the special garnered mixed reviews from long-time fans regarding the omission of certain character subplots and the accelerated pacing, it was recognized for its updated character designs and high-fidelity animation sequences that brought the vibrant geography of Skypiea to life for a contemporary television audience.
