Where it came from
One Piece Film: Gold was released in 2016 as the thirteenth feature film in the long-running One Piece franchise. Produced by Toei Animation, the film was directed by Hiroaki Miyamoto, who previously served as a series director for the anime. The narrative focuses on the Straw Hat Pirates infiltrating Gran Tesoro, a massive, independent entertainment city governed by the antagonist Gild Tesoro, which serves as an allegory for greed and the corruptive influence of wealth within the series' world-building.
The film's visual aesthetic was heavily influenced by creator Eiichiro Oda, who served as an executive producer and was deeply involved in the character design process. Oda envisioned a high-stakes, opulent setting that stood apart from the typical island adventures of the series, drawing inspiration from the glitz of Las Vegas. Upon its release, the film was received as a stylistic departure that leaned into extravagant heist-movie tropes, ultimately achieving significant commercial success across Asian markets.
