Ooedo Torimonochou: Nezumi Kozou

Released in the early 1990s, Ooedo Torimonochou: Nezumi Kozou represents a unique experimental period for Sanrio, a company primarily recognized for its character-driven merchandise and stationery rather than historical period dramas. This OVA (Original Video Animation) adapted classic Japanese folklore centered on Nezumi Kozou, the legendary Edo-period thief who functioned as a Robin Hood figure in popular culture. By applying a softer, distinctively Sanrio-adjacent aesthetic to traditional jidaigeki storytelling, the studio sought to broaden its creative portfolio beyond its core demographic of young girls.

The animation reflects the stylistic hallmarks of the bubble-era anime industry, prioritizing whimsical character designs and accessible narratives to modernize historical legends. While Sanrio had previously dipped into film production, this title was intended as a standalone experiment in storytelling. Because it lacked the heavy commercial branding of Hello Kitty or My Melody, it remained a niche production, appreciated primarily by collectors of 90s animation curiosities rather than the broader Sanrio mainstream audience.
