Where it came from
Ooi! Hanimaru was a prominent children's television program broadcast by NHK in Japan during the late 1980s and early 1990s. The series centered on the adventures of a whimsical, energetic character named Hanimaru and his companion, a haniwa clay figure, designed to teach young viewers about language, history, and social interaction through imaginative play and educational segments.
The character design for Hanimaru was inspired by ancient Japanese haniwa artifacts, reimagining historical stoneware as a living, expressive puppet. The show was received warmly by Japanese families for its gentle educational approach and its ability to blend cultural heritage with contemporary children's entertainment, eventually becoming a nostalgic touchstone for the generation that grew up during its initial broadcast run.
