Oraa Guzura Dado (1987)

Oraa Guzura Dado, or 'I Am Guzura,' was produced by Tatsunoko Production and aired in 1987 as a modern reimagining of their 1967 original series. The show centers on Guzura, a lovable, mischievous, and gluttonous prehistoric monster who emerges from a volcano and finds himself integrated into the life of a typical suburban family. This iteration was designed to capture the slapstick and surreal humor that characterized Tatsunoko’s lighter-hearted output during the mid-eighties, emphasizing a soft, comedic aesthetic that contrasted with the more serious mecha and action anime dominating the era.

The production sought to revitalize the character for a new generation, employing a team of veteran Tatsunoko artists to refine the creature's round, rubbery design to better suit contemporary animation cel techniques. While it leaned heavily on the whimsical spirit of the original sixties classic, the 1987 series was received as a nostalgic curiosity, blending the studio's traditional character-driven storytelling with the gag-comedy trends prevalent in Japanese television at the time. It remains a notable example of the studio's tendency to revisit their classic library, maintaining a niche appeal among collectors of Showa-era animation history.
