Where it came from
Orange: Future was released in 2016 as a companion piece to the television anime adaptation of Ichigo Takano’s popular shojo manga series. Produced by Telecom Animation Film and directed by Hiroshi Hamasaki, the film serves as both a retelling of the original series and an epilogue, offering a new perspective through the eyes of the character Suwa. The project was conceived to provide a more definitive conclusion to the emotional narrative established in the manga, focusing on the themes of regret, friendship, and the complexities of changing one’s timeline.
The film maintains the character designs and gentle aesthetic established by the television series, which aimed to capture the grounded, melancholic tone of Takano’s artwork. While the television series was praised for its earnest storytelling, the film received mixed but appreciative reviews from fans who valued the additional narrative closure it provided regarding the characters' futures. It remains a notable entry in the romance genre for its commitment to exploring the consequences of choices made in both the past and the present.
