Orbital Era is set in the near-future on a space colony under construction. The film features a coming-of-age action-adventure story following the lives of young boys surviving in this peculiar environment and society as they are tossed around by fate. "The reality found in mankind's future" will be depicted through their perspective.
The story will take place over four seasons in the space colony. The characters relationships will unfold over these seasons. Otomo noted that the film is set in the future, but instead of being rooted in science fiction, the story will skew more toward fantasy.

Where it came from
Orbital Era was announced in 2019 as the third major original feature film project from director Katsuhiro Otomo, following his acclaimed works Akira and Steamboy. Set in the near future, the film is designed to follow a group of children living on a space colony, blending the complex technical detail synonymous with Otomo’s animation style with a narrative focused on the human experience within a shifting orbital environment.
The production is being handled by the renowned studio Sunrise, known for its deep history in the mecha and science fiction genres. Otomo has stated his intention to provide a unique perspective on space exploration through the eyes of the young protagonists, creating a work that captures both the grandeur and the claustrophobia of orbital life. Although the project remains in development, it is widely anticipated for its focus on intricate world-building and the distinctive visual storytelling that has defined Otomo's career.
