Oshie to Tabi Suru Otoko

Oshie to Tabi Suru Otoko was released in 2018 as a film adaptation of the 1918 short story The Tale of the Oshie and the Carp-Banner by Edogawa Ranpo. The project was conceived as part of an experimental multimedia collaboration involving the Japan Foundation and various artists, designed to bridge classical Japanese literature with contemporary animation techniques to introduce the surrealist, psychological themes of early 20th-century Japanese detective fiction to a new generation.

The film was directed by Taku Furukawa, an animator known for his distinctive, minimalist style and long-standing career in experimental shorts. By utilizing the traditional aesthetic of the source material—centered around a man’s obsession with a doll-like oshie—Furukawa focused on a slow-paced, atmospheric visual language that emphasized the uncanny nature of the original text. It was received by audiences and critics as a niche, artistic endeavor that favored mood and historical fidelity over mainstream narrative conventions.
