Where it came from
Otoboku: Maidens are Falling for Me was produced by studio feel. and aired in 2006 as an adaptation of the popular visual novel by Caramel Box. The series emerged during a period of significant growth for the romance-comedy subgenre in anime, specifically focusing on the premise of a male protagonist disguising himself as a female student to attend an all-girls academy. The adaptation was directed by Munenori Nawa, who aimed to balance the comedic elements of the original game's 'cross-dressing' scenario with a more focused narrative arc.
The character designs for the anime were handled by Shigenori Shimogasa, who adapted the original source art into a visual style suitable for television animation. Upon its release, the series was noted by critics for its polished animation quality and its ability to treat its premise with a mix of humor and sincerity. While it occupies a specific niche within the mid-2000s anime landscape, it remains recognized for effectively translating the visual novel experience into a standalone 12-episode television format.
