Where it came from
Released in 2018 as a special bonus episode bundled with the limited edition Blu-ray of the second season of the Overlord anime, this ONA serves as an installment in the Ple Ple Pleiades short series. The production was spearheaded by Studio Puyukai, led by director Minoru Ashina, who is known for his signature chibi-style parodies of popular dark fantasy franchises. The intent was to provide a humorous, lighthearted counterpoint to the intense narrative of the main series, focusing on the quirky, often morbid interactions of the Pleiades battle maids.
The episode, subtitled 'Clementine Toubou-hen' or 'Clementine Escape Arc,' brings back the fan-favorite antagonist Clementine in a comedic context, subverting the darker tone of her original appearance. The design approach relies on Super Deformed character aesthetics, which allows the creative team to experiment with slapstick humor and meta-commentary that would otherwise feel out of place in the primary anime adaptation. Upon release, it was well-received by the dedicated Overlord fanbase for its ability to soften the series' grim atmosphere while remaining true to the personalities of the characters.
