Where it came from
Overlord: Ple Ple Pleiades Tokubetsu-hen was produced by Studio PuYUKAI in 2015 as a companion series to the main Overlord anime adaptation. Directed by Minoru Ashina, this ONA consists of short, comedic vignettes featuring the Pleiades battle maids. The series was designed to provide a lighter, chibi-style contrast to the dark fantasy themes of the primary narrative, focusing on character interactions and situational humor within the Great Tomb of Nazarick.
The animation style is characteristic of Studio PuYUKAI’s minimalist, super-deformed aesthetic, which has become a hallmark of their spin-off work for major franchises. This approach was intended to humanize the often villainous cast of the series, making the high-level NPCs more accessible and endearing to the audience. Upon its release, the shorts were well received by fans of the light novel series for their ability to balance the show’s established lore with irreverent, self-aware comedic timing.
