Panda! Go Panda!

Panda! Go Panda! was released in 1972 by Tokyo Movie Shinsha as a short feature film designed to capitalize on the immense popularity of giant pandas in Japan following the arrival of the first pandas at Ueno Zoo. The project is historically significant for its creative team, as it served as a collaborative playground for future Studio Ghibli icons; it was directed by Isao Takahata, with a screenplay and layout work by Hayao Miyazaki, while Yasuo Otsuka oversaw the animation direction.

The film was intended as a lighthearted, whimsical story for children, centering on a young girl named Mimiko who encounters a father and child panda. Miyazaki’s character designs for the lead panda, Papanda, directly influenced the aesthetic of his later masterpiece, My Neighbor Totoro. Although it began as a relatively modest production, the film’s charming character dynamics and emotional sincerity have earned it a lasting reputation as a foundational work in the development of the distinct storytelling style that would define the careers of its primary creators.
