Where it came from
Paper Rabbit Rope, known in Chinese as Tu Si Bei, originated as a viral stop-motion web series created by the animator Hu Rui. The project gained significant attention in 2012 for its distinct visual style, which utilized simple paper cutouts to tell poignant, often melancholy stories about modern life and societal pressures in China. Episode 0 serves as a foundational short for the series, establishing the minimalist aesthetic and the cynical, observational tone that would define the franchise.
The design of the series centers on a weary-looking rabbit protagonist, serving as an allegory for the common individual navigating the frustrations of urban existence. Hu Rui intended for the medium of paper animation to reflect the fragility of the characters' lives. Upon its release, the episode was widely praised by internet audiences for its artistic sincerity and relatability, marking it as a notable milestone in early 2010s Chinese independent digital animation.
