Where it came from
PILI Fantasy: War of Dragons represents a modern evolution of Pili, a long-running Taiwanese puppet show phenomenon that originated in the 1980s. Developed by Pili International Multimedia, the series preserves the tradition of budaixi, or glove puppetry, while integrating advanced computer-generated imagery and cinematic production techniques to appeal to a global audience, particularly through streaming platforms.
The production relies on the meticulous craftsmanship of master puppeteers and artisans who create intricate figures and elaborate sets. The series was designed to condense the complex, decades-spanning lore of the Pili universe into a more accessible narrative arc, focusing on high-stakes fantasy combat and ornate character design, which has been central to the franchise's identity and its success in elevating traditional folk performance into a contemporary transmedia brand.
