In the future humankind has expanded and colonized other planets. Then an alien species, Victim, attacks the human colonies leaving only one planet, Zion. In an effort to stop Victim from destroying the last planet a training school, GOA, is set up to gather boys from the Zion colonies and train them to become pilots of the Ingrids AKA The Goddesses, five fighting robots that protect Zion. The boys must possess a rare blood type, EO , as well as a special ability, or EX. Zero (Candidate 88) has just arrived in GOA when he falls into the cockpit of the Ingrid Eeva-Leena. Since the synch between pilot and Ingrid are very sensitive everyone believes the Goddess will kill Zero in an attempt to synch. Just before Zero passes out he makes a full synch with the Goddess. Before he can find out more about the incident, his pilot training begins.

Where it came from
Pilot Candidate, known in Japan as Candidate for Goddess, emerged in 2000 as a product of studio Xebec under the production of Bandai Visual. Adapted from the manga by Yukiru Sugisaki, the series was conceived during a period when the mecha genre was heavily influenced by the psychological and character-driven narratives popularized in the late 1990s. The story centers on a training academy for pilots operating giant machines to defend a colony, framing the central conflict around the rigorous physical and mental tolls placed on its teenage protagonists.
The visual aesthetic of the series reflects the turn-of-the-millennium shift toward blending traditional cel animation with early digital techniques, emphasizing the intimate connection between the pilots and their craft. Upon its release, the series garnered attention for its unique premise, though it was noted for its unconventional pacing and an ending that left many narrative threads unresolved. Despite its limited scope as a short-run series, it remains a recognized title among fans of the science fiction genre from the era.
