Pink no Curtain

Pink no Curtain was released in 1987 as a standalone original video animation. It emerged during the peak of the 1980s OVA boom, a period when the Japanese animation industry leveraged direct-to-video releases to explore more experimental, mature, or niche content that did not necessarily suit a serialized television format. The project was produced by the studio Magic Bus, which sought to capitalize on the increasing appetite for stylish, short-form storytelling in the home video market.

The animation was directed and storyboarded by the notable artist Yasuomi Umetsu, who is celebrated for his distinctively sharp, highly detailed character designs and kinetic visual flair. Umetsu aimed to blend contemporary urban aesthetics with an evocative, atmospheric narrative. Upon its release, the work was received as a stylish example of high-end cel animation from the era, frequently cited by collectors for its technical craftsmanship and the specific visual sensibilities that would come to define Umetsu’s later contributions to the medium.
