In the distant future, on the outskirts left behind by the rapid concentration of advanced science and technology in urban areas, lies a remote mountain village known as Kagami Village.
“Behave yourself, or a Double will come for you.”
Such old folklore still lingers in this village.
Akane Higure, a middle school student living in Kagami Village, has been eagerly awaiting the return of her older sister, Sui Higure, who is finally being discharged from the hospital after a year.
However, not long after her sister comes home, Akane receives a single phone call.
“The girl at home with you… isn’t your sister.”

Where it came from
Playing Sister, released as an original net animation in 2026, serves as a notable entry in the experimental portfolio of Studio Gohan. Developed during a period of shifting industry standards toward digital-first distribution, the title was conceived as a character-driven study focused on themes of domestic intimacy and familial dynamics. The studio aimed to contrast traditional narrative structures with a minimalist aesthetic, favoring atmospheric storytelling over conventional action sequences.
The production aesthetic was largely shaped by the studio’s internal animation team, who utilized a hybrid approach blending hand-drawn key frames with subtle digital compositing. Upon its debut, the work received moderate critical attention for its restrained pacing and muted color palette. Critics generally framed it as a reflective piece that showcased the studio's technical capabilities in rendering nuanced emotional states, though its niche appeal meant it remained a specialized title within the wider context of contemporary independent animation.
