Where it came from
Pokémon: Distant Blue Sky! was produced by OLM and released in late 2022 as a special commemorative episode to mark the conclusion of Ash Ketchum’s twenty-five-year journey as the protagonist of the long-running anime series. Released during the final season of Pokémon Journeys, the episode was designed as a nostalgic tribute to the original 1997 series, intentionally mirroring the tone and visual style of the early Kanto adventures to provide a poignant capstone to Ash's development.
The narrative was crafted by long-time series contributors who aimed to reconnect Ash with the themes of human-Pokémon connection that defined his character arc. By juxtaposing his seasoned maturity with the whimsical, episodic nature of his earliest travels, the production team sought to offer a final, intimate reflection on his bond with Pikachu. The special was received by the global fanbase as a respectful and emotionally resonant farewell to the character's primary tenure.
