Where it came from
Released in 2012, Meloetta's Moonlight Serenade is a special short film produced by OLM, Inc. to accompany the theatrical release of Pokémon the Movie: Kyurem vs. the Sword of Justice. It was created as part of the annual tradition of producing feature-length animated shorts alongside the main films, specifically intended to showcase the Mythical Pokémon Meloetta, which had been introduced earlier that year through the fifth-generation games.
The film was directed by Kunihiko Yuyama, a long-time creative lead on the Pokémon franchise, who aimed to highlight Meloetta’s musical capabilities and its ability to switch between its Aria and Pirouette forms. Stylistically, the short focuses on a whimsical, dreamlike narrative to emphasize the character's artistic nature. It was well-received by fans for its polished animation quality and served as a vehicle to promote Meloetta’s distribution events across Japan and international markets.
