Pokémon: Mewtwo—Prologue to Awakening

Pokémon: Mewtwo—Prologue to Awakening was produced by OLM, Inc. and released in 2013 as a prologue special leading into the feature film Pokémon the Movie: Genesect and the Legend Awakened. The special was created to provide narrative context for Mewtwo’s arrival in the film, detailing the character's escape from the Pokémon Hills facility and its struggle to reconcile its synthetic origin with the natural world.

The production sought to reintroduce a iteration of Mewtwo that felt distinct from the version featured in the original 1998 film, emphasizing a tragic, isolated perspective. The animation style aligns with the aesthetics of the Best Wishes series era, focusing on fluid action sequences during Mewtwo’s flight and subsequent conflicts. Upon its release, it served its primary function as a bridge for the theatrical event, earning appreciation from fans for offering a self-contained story that fleshed out the character's motivations prior to its cinematic debut.
