Ponsuke no Udekurabe

Ponsuke no Udekurabe, released in 1951, serves as a significant artifact from the early era of Japanese television-era animation production. Produced by TBS Sparkle—then operating within a landscape where experimental puppet and cutout animation were primary methods for storytelling—the film reflects the post-war efforts to establish domestic animation standards outside of the theatrical feature film tradition.

The film is an adaptation of a Japanese folktale, utilizing a distinctive visual aesthetic common to early experimental shorts of the period. While specific records regarding individual designers for this project remain elusive, the work is characteristic of the mid-century effort to bridge traditional folklore with modern broadcast media, aimed primarily at younger audiences in a developing post-war cultural market.
